When cleaning is enough

If some segments are missing, faint, or intermittent, the zebra strips between the glass and the board are usually oxidized or flattened. Cleaning those contacts restores most meters for a while. If the whole display is evenly washed out, the glass itself may be failing and a kit will not restore contrast.

Tools

Clean the display stack

  1. Power the meter off. Remove input leads. Take out the battery. On older cases that means splitting the shell first.
  2. Remove the case screws and separate the top and bottom. Keep any gasket on the bottom half.
  3. Lift the board only as far as needed to reach the display. Note keypad and shield orientation.
  4. Unclip the LCD mask / faceplate. Lift the glass from the edges. The pink or gray strips often come with it.
  5. Wipe the top and bottom edges of each elastomer and the matching edges of the LCD with alcohol. Let them dry.
  6. Seat the strips in the board channels, set the LCD digit-side up, snap the mask back, and close the case.
  7. Install a known-good battery and check every segment. If dropouts return, replace the strips with the kit below.
